This past Thursday the Austin Bulldog Band and Angels Dance Team traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana to compete in the Bands of America Grand National Championships along with 90 other bands from across the country. After a good performance in the preliminary round on Friday, the band and Angels advanced to the Semi Finals on Saturday morning. A strong semi finals performance earned the band and Angels 3rd place in class 3A, and advancement to the finals to compete with the top twelve bands in the country. Saturday night in finals, the band and Angels had their best performance of the year, earning 9th place in one of the most highly competitive BOA finals in years.
AHS JROTC cadets recently competed in 7 events at the extremely competitive, multi-service Seguin High School Veterans’ Classic Drill Meet. Out of 35 JROTC units (19 Navy) participating, AHS achieved 4th place among Navy units and 7th place overall. The Academic Team took 1st place and the Air Rifle Team 3rd place in the shoulder-to-shoulder competition. Competing teams with inspections included Armed Drill 4th among Navy, 7th overall; Unarmed Drill 5th among Navy, 11th overall; Female Color Guard 7th among Navy, 11th overall. Physical Training took 10th among Navy, 17th overall and Obstacle Course 10th among Navy and 18th overall. Special congratulations go out to Cadet K’hari Matthews for the fastest run time among all competitors and to Cadet Shawn Cleary who had the 3rd highest overall score in the Air Rifle Sporter division. The cadets next travel to Corpus Christi in December for the Coastal Bend Classic Drill Meet. A 1st or 2d place overall among Navy units qualifies them to compete in the State Meet at College Station in February. The AHS Orchestra is in the top two orchestras in the State for the 5th year in a row. Since the school has opened we have had 109 orchestra students accepted to Texas All-State Orchestra.
